Description
Pair of antique bedside lamps made from two vintage palm handles, lacquered in ochre and green shades in various tones. The palm trunk is mounted on a square base, with two carved spirals on the sides serving as handles. Natural earth pigments were used for lacquering, and the object is in good condition. The back part is unfinished, as it was originally attached to an altar. They originate from central Italy and date back to the early decades of the 19th century. The lamps have E14 (mignon) sockets and are electrified for a maximum power of 150 watts each, with a fan-shaped parchment shade. The handle itself measures 22 – 20 x 12 cm.
Original antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decoration. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that possess a specific character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, notably the Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Beautiful Empire-style furniture dates from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was influenced by Napoleon’s reign, which imposed a strong resemblance to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture, such as Louis XVI style, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was characterized by highly ornate furniture meant to radiate splendor and luxury. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can see how much the Baroque style influenced modern classic furniture, which often resembles the grandeur of the past. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often using dark stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were also popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws and eagle heads are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands recreate such furniture inspired by Italian and French artisans, paying homage to the beauty of Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture styles varied by country, each with its unique character. This is especially relevant when searching for a luxurious antique that fits perfectly into a specific interior.
The key to stylish antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately crucial for buyers, as many forgeries circulate on the market.
