Unique antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decoration. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that possess character and soul. It is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
There are numerous styles characteristic of antique furniture, but a few key ones stand out. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, during which the Biedermeier style was predominant. Early in that century, antique styles included Neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.
Beautiful Empire-style furniture dates from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, characterized by significant influence from Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI style, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. The next style is Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces designed to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Selectively used luxurious materials emphasized the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how strongly the Baroque style influenced modern classic furniture, which is often designed with a resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often finished with brown stains, featuring cornices, sturdy bases, and relief decorations. These products were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly conceived chest furniture. During this period, interest in mythology and antiquity was prevalent, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Today, many global brands recreate such furniture inspired by Italian and French artisans, paying homage to the beauty of Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently across countries, giving each style a unique character. This is especially important when selecting a luxurious antique for your interior.
The most important aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is crucial for buyers, as the market is flooded with counterfeits.
