The burial of Jesus - an ancient painting

Today, we are pleased to present to you an exceptional 16th-century work, in the form of a painting - The Laying of Jesus in the Tomb.

This work is profoundly emotionally engaging, utilizing theatrical use of color, light, and the gestures of the characters.

The true magic of the image lies in the very personal use of light and colors by the painter, with chiaroscuro effects that emphasize its three-dimensionality. Here, the artist demonstrates that they can highlight an original and intense path of Baroque painting. Blocked gestures, dramatic lighting, blinding reds, and clarity of details create an almost metaphysical effect.

The almost unnatural atmosphere is illuminated by figures emerging from the dark background of foliage, stepping forward as if onto a theatrical stage directly in front of the viewer. Each individual gesture takes on shades of dramatic and shared despair.

The scene is dominated by the muscular, still powerful body of Christ, while Joseph of Arimathea supports his head, tilted back. The latter, who traditionally, due to his rank and age, holds greater significance than Nicodemus, who instead holds the shroud from the foot side. In the foreground, kneeling and weeping Mary Magdalene with loose, long, flowing hair. She is struck by the soft and sensual red cloak that surrounds her.

The barely visible figure of Mary appears in the background, hunched with her face covered by a blue cloak and supported in the arms of one of the pious women.

This Baroque work from the Emilia school is inspired by Christ laid in the tomb by Annibale Carracci.

The contemporary "box" frame with carved edges, corners, and centers, accented with leaf decorations and gilded petal details.
