We are pleased to present to you a unique antique painting.
Portrait of a Praying Saint (18th Century). The painting depicts an older saint during prayer, shown in a three-quarter view facing left. The figure – distinguished by a thick beard and sparse hair ranging from golden blonde to light brown – has closed eyes and a head tilted back, expressing deep piety or penitence. The saint’s hands are folded on the chest in a classic prayer gesture. Around the head, a delicate outline of a slender, circular halo is visible. Iconography indicates this is a depiction of Saint Peter as a penitent (usually portrayed as an older bearded man engaged in prayer or weeping) or as a hermit or apostle. This is an antique oil painting on canvas, bearing signs of paint layer loss, especially in the lower part of the work.
The color palette is warm but kept in a serious tone; it features a dark – almost black – background, which highlights the figure, reflecting Baroque chiaroscuro techniques inspired by 17th-century methods. The saint wears a deep red or brick-colored cloak or mantle over a tunic in ochre and gold shades. The light and shadow on the fabrics and beard are rendered with expressive, graphic brushstrokes. The work shows clear signs of aging and structural damage: on the right side (at the level of the saint’s shoulder), there is a large loss of material affecting both the ground and the paint layer; additionally, there are smaller paint losses, especially on the face and chest areas.
