Platter with Compendiario decoration, Deruta - 18th century

Today we are pleased to present to you an exceptional 18th-century platter.

Majolica Crespina with Compendiario decoration, Deruta, 1700, depicting an winged cherub (or Cupid). The cherub holds a laurel wreath (a symbol of victory or virtue) and a staff with two small pennants or streamers. The edge is “petal-shaped” or “ruffled,” and its wavy form gives the piece a sense of dynamism.

The border decoration features a stylized garland with small yellow flowers and S-shaped scrolls, adorned with classic majolica colors: cobalt, yellow ochre (antimony), and accents of brown/manganese. This decoration is described as “compendiario” style, characterized by a subdued and restrained aesthetic.

The Crespina is characterized by a dense network of fine cracks on the glazed surface. In ceramics, this effect often results from thermal shock or natural glaze aging on the clay over time. It is a majolica coaster used for serving sweets or dried fruits, colloquially called a crespin (a deep, profiled vessel placed on a pedestal), made in Deruta in the 18th century.

It is in good condition despite old restorations visible on the left side of the cherub and at the edge in several places (at 10 and 7 o'clock). The old restorations are visible as yellowish discolorations on the surface caused by the oxidation of retouching glazes over time.
