We are pleased to present to you an original sculpture made of ceramic.
Felice Tosalli Tuffetti, Pair of birds of the same species, Manufactory Lenci, Turin, 1939 Sculpture, called Tuffetti, depicts two birds of the same species. One bird is in a crouching position, and the other is standing upright. However, in nature, coots look different than the ones shown in the image.

The birds described by Tosalli are in fact Eurasian Coots, diving birds with long beaks and slender bodies, double crests, and brown-black tufts on their heads, which open up when in danger or during courtship. Compared to other works by Tosalli, these two birds feature simplified plumage and anatomical details.

Nevertheless, they retain all the unique features of the species. The ceramic was introduced into the factory’s collection in the mid-1930s, but the sculptor was already working on similar pieces in the 1920s. Thanks to its success, this new ceramic invention was chosen by the magazine Domus to illustrate the new proposals presented by Lenci at the VI Triennale in Milan in 1936.
It reappeared a few months later in the same magazine in an article promoting Italian ceramic production in the context of the 1937 Paris World Exhibition. The Tosalli Group, added by Lenci to the product catalog already published between 1933–1935, also appears in a colorful promotional brochure printed in the 1950s. In good condition, with minor chips on the tips of the plumage. Lenci, Turin, 1939.
