Saint George and the Dragon, oil painting from the early 18th century on oak panel, created in the early 18th century, representing the Italian school, northern region. The ancient image depicts the saint dismounted from his horse after taming the monstrous dragon, which submits and obediently lies on the ground in the lower right part of the composition with its jaws wide open.

The legend recounted by Jacopo da Voragine states that the dragon was tormenting the Libyan city of Selem and its inhabitants kept offering sacrifices to appease it. When it was the princess’s turn, Saint George appeared on horseback and neutralized the creature, then invited the princess to tie it up and take it to the city.

The central figure in this ancient work is Saint George. He is depicted standing upright, dismounted from his horse, wearing a helmet with a plume, a large purple cloak thrown over his shoulders, with his raised arm as he addresses the princess kneeling before him with folded hands, absorbed in prayer. The winged dragon submits and yields at the saint’s feet.
