Tragic mask of Cacciapuoti - Art Deco sculpture

Tragic mask of Cacciapuoti - Art Deco sculpture

Today we would like to present to you a very unique sculpture depicting a tragic mask.

Cacciapuoti Tragic Mask, a figurative sculpture in the Art Deco style by Neapolitan artist Guido Cacciapuoti (Naples 1892 - Milan 1953) depicting a tragic mask, made of ceramic, hand-shaped and silver-plated on the front.

The sculpture is signed by Cacciapuoti on the back and rests on a black lacquered wooden base measuring 16 x 10 x 10 cm. It comes from a private collection of a Milanese set designer and is in good conservation condition, with a beautiful oxidation patina.

An human face with exceptional expressive abilities, simplified form, stylized features, and dramatic expression. Like a shadow, it evokes the category of doppelgänger, acting as a curtain that hides to reveal. Dualism is a symbol of Greek masks, joyful comedy, and sad tragedy.

This dual meaning of revelation and concealment is well reflected in the double etymology of this word: in Latin, mask means a person, while in Arabic, maskharah means caricature, mockery.

Period: 20th century

Height: 48cm

Width: 22.5cm

Depth: 11cm
