Pieta made of polychrome terracotta - 1700

Pieta made of polychrome terracotta - 1700

Today, we are pleased to present to you an exceptionally valuable item, undoubtedly the Italian Pietà from around 1700.

Polychrome terracotta Pietà from 1700, mounted on a lacquered and gilded wooden base. This magnificent depiction is an example of 18th-century Bologna sculpture, attributed to the circle of Angelo Gabriello Piò (Bologna 1690 – 1770). It impresses with the plasticity of the bodies and the softness of the draped garments; Christ is depicted with perfect anatomy and a composed posture that conveys calmness.

He rests on the knees of the Virgin, who, holding his left hand, appears to gaze into the horizon with surprise and disorientation. At his feet are symbols of Passion.

The sculptural group has been optimally restored by reassembling the cracks near the symbols of Passion: they have been glued and reinforced from the underside with patches.

Two fingers of Christ's left hand have been reconstructed. The current polychrome is original and has been retouched only around the edges at the base. The sculpture rests on a shaped base made of lacquered green poplar with a gilded profile. It comes from a private collection in Milan. The dimensions provided refer to the terracotta size; the height of the base should be added, which is 5 cm high, with overall dimensions of 71 x 36 cm.
