Description
The brand Tissot, established in the mid-nineteenth century in a small town of Le Locle, one of the birthplaces of the art of Swiss watchmaking, has a rich and fascinating history.
How it began?
On the first day of July 1853 Charles-Félicien Tissot, who dealt with gold envelopes, founded the shop Ch. Félicien Tissot & Fils together with his son, Charles-Emil Tissot, a watchmaker. Tissot was functioning then as comptoir d’établissage, which means a network of independent and highly qualified workers producing a particular parts of watches at their own homes.
Later, these elements were put together and sold in the shop. Tissot produced mainly pocket watches, luxurious watches on a chain and functional timepieces, which were mainly intended to be sold in the United States, which were the first market for the company. The next step for the Swiss producer was Russia – a big and wealthy market.
By the end of the year 1917 the company Chs. Tissot & Fils was established and became a manufactory because of the introduction of mechanization to the production of semi-finished products, which remained that way for the following decades. Shortly after this, the brand strengthened its presence in the international market.
- In the year 1930, Tissot and Omega had merged to form the first Swiss watchmaking company SSIH (Société Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogère).
In the 70’s the Swiss watchmaking industry was hit severely by the crisis, which came along the introduction of quartz watches. In the year 1983 Nicolas G. Hayek, who was leading the audit of the watchmaking sector, advised to merge the largest groups of watch producers of that time: SSIH (mainly Tissot and Omega) and ASUAG (a holding joining producers of semi-finished products for mechanisms and components).
A group named SMH (Swiss Corporation for Microelectronics and Watchmaking Industries Ltd.) has transformed into The Swatch Group in 1998. Since the year 1996 the company Tissot is managed by François Thiébaud.
Today Tissot is a well-known and elite brand of watches, recognized by collectors and lovers of good design around the world.
