How to make a home-made scalp scrub?

The cosmetics industry is constantly evolving. Currently, we have access to modern shampoos in various forms, conditioners, masks, oils, and styling products. For some time now, hair scrubs have been gaining popularity. You can opt for ready-made products or make your own. Want to know how? We’ve got some tips!

What does a scalp scrub do?

A scalp scrub has exactly the same purpose as those for the body or face, namely to remove dead skin cells and impurities. It can be an important support in the fight against dandruff and irritation, and also improves blood circulation. The scrub also helps reduce excess oil production, as a clean scalp stays fresh longer.

Types of scrubs

    • Mechanical – contain small abrasive particles such as salt, sugar, or ground seeds, which physically remove dead skin cells.
    • Enzymatic – work gently by relying on natural plant-based enzymes.
    • Chemical – use acids (e.g., AHA, BHA), making them effective for excessive scalp oiliness and dandruff issues.

Note! If you know you have sensitive, delicate scalp skin, choose enzymatic scrubs and ready-made formulas (many products and care tips can be found here: https://onlybio.life/), which are safer than homemade mixtures.

How to prepare a homemade scalp scrub?

You can use one of several scrub recipes.

    1. Sugar scrub for dry skin
This is one of the simplest, most affordable scrubs. Just mix 2-3 tablespoons of sugar with a small amount of conditioner or hair shampoo. Apply this mixture to the scalp, massage for 2-3 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
    2. Salt scrub for oily and greasy scalp
Prepare 2 tablespoons of coarse sea salt or Himalayan salt and 1 tablespoon of olive oil or aloe gel. Mix them, apply to the scalp, and gently massage the scalp.
    3. Yogurt-cinnamon scrub for sensitive skin
You need 2 tablespoons of natural yogurt and a pinch of cinnamon, which has antibacterial properties. Massage the ingredients into the scalp, leave for a few minutes, then rinse.
    4. Coffee scrub for normal skin
To prepare this scrub, you need 2 tablespoons of freshly ground coffee and a tablespoon of olive oil, coconut oil, or another oil suitable for your scalp. Apply to the scalp, massage, leave for 5 minutes, then rinse well and wash your hair with shampoo.

How to perform a scalp scrub?

It’s worth doing a scalp scrub regularly, but don’t overdo it. Once every 1-2 weeks is sufficient. During application, massage the scalp gently, avoiding scratching too hard to prevent irritation. After the treatment, always rinse the product thoroughly and wash your hair with shampoo to remove any residue. Then apply conditioner or mask to your hair.

If your skin is sensitive, has cuts, or tends to irritation, choose gentler recipes, e.g., with sugar, yogurt, or aloe. You can also opt for a ready-made product, which will save you the effort of preparing a scrub. Additionally, this reduces the risk of allergies or irritation.
