German music box with a bird - early 20th century

We are pleased to present to you a unique antique music box from Germany.

A German bird automaton from the early 20th century, consisting of a round gilded brass cage with a singing bird inside, perched on a perch with a mushroom at the base.

The Wunderkammer — automata and music boxes have always been crafted by master clockmakers to amaze. The joy brought by the sight of these moving, singing, looking at each other, communicating without apparent mechanical noise and as if by secret magic, stimulates the observer’s imagination, giving a sense of true life in the forest.

In our case, this birdcage depicts the love song of a male nightingale; the song begins when the key is inserted under the base and can be stopped by pulling the lever on the edge of the cage. The synchronization of mechanical movement and sound should be considered practically perfect and closely aligned with reality. The pursuit of this extraordinary effect of non-virtual truth has distinguished a good clockmaker from a truly genius one.

This singing bird cage is an animated automaton made of gilded brass at the beginning of the 20th century by the company Karl Griesbaum (1872-1941), see the engraved logo on the bottom with the bird, initials K G, and "Made in Germany." The company was founded in 1905 in the Black Forest, Triberg, Baden-Württemberg region, by Karl Griesbaum (1872-1941), son of the renowned watchmaker Mathias.

The internal mechanism consists of several bellows operated by traction springs and is fully functional. Overall condition is good, showing signs of wear consistent with its early 20th-century age.
