Antique polychrome sculpture of a standing Baby Jesus with a heart - 17th century

We are pleased to present to you a historic religious sculpture from the 17th century.

Historic polychromed sculpture depicting standing Child Jesus with Heart. The figure is shown in a standing position, with the weight shifted slightly onto the left leg. The right arm is extended outward, holding a heart (although it may also be an apple or pomegranate fruit – traditional iconographic symbols associated with original sin or the Passion of Christ). The left arm hangs down, slightly forward, with the palm facing upward. The face features gentle, childlike features and slightly blushed cheeks. Large, wide-open dark eyes gaze slightly upward or toward the viewer, giving the figure an expression of calm and contemplation. The hair is brown and wavy, styled in soft curls framing the face.

The child's torso is exposed, revealing anatomical detailing that combines softness of form with pronounced musculature. The hips and legs are partially covered with a dark red fabric tied at the waist on the left side. The drapery is skillfully carved with deep folds, creating a sense of dynamism in the figure. The work was likely made of wood, which was then polychromed. The painted surface shows clear signs of aging: fine cracks, minor abrasions, and paint loss – especially on the shoulders, legs, and feet – characteristic of antique sculptures, indicating their authenticity and age.

The toes are missing on the feet (as well as on the left hand); however, the clean breaks suggest these parts once contacted other decorative elements, indicating that the sculpture was once part of a more complex composition. The eyes are made of glass; one is cracked. Italy, 17th century.
