Antique pilgrim bottle

Antique pilgrim bottle

We are pleased to present to you a unique pilgrim's bottle made of ceramic.

Pilgrim's flask in the shape of a lens, without a base, with four side handles (one missing), featuring a white background and floral decorations in shades of green, ochre, and blue. The vessel is in good condition, dating from the second half of the 19th century, originating from Emilia-Romagna.

These small terracotta bottles were designed to hold water or other liquids necessary to quench thirst during pilgrims' journeys. They are relatively small, lens-shaped, and can be attached to a belt or carried over the shoulder using a string wrapped around the vessel, inserted into four loops or perforated sockets on the sides.

Therefore, the basic traveler's tool was soon decorated and enriched with new shapes, both in the plastic of the flask and in its typology, until specific forms were found, such as empty bottles in the middle, which, equipped with a base, suggest a more decorative function rather than a practical one.
