Antique etching depicting a pyramid - Giovan Battista

Today, we are pleased to present to you a unique etching depicting the Pyramid of Cestius from 1756.

Large-format copper etching depicting the pyramid built between 18–12 BC as the tomb of Gaius Cestius Epulo.

This neoclassical engraving, in good condition, with reduced margins, is printed on crepe paper, with the engraved part measuring 385 x 535 mm, and is supplied with cardboard in a modern frame.

In the lower right corner, a legend with descriptions: 1) Area cleared around the Pyramid during Pope Alexander VII's pontificate; 2) Open doors from that period in the Pyramid; Columns found on the meadow and placed in their ancient location; 4) Walls of Rome; 5) Towers of Porta di S. Paolo. Under the legend, we find "U autora" and "Piranesi F." The description of various elements on the print, such as the ground around the pyramid, rediscovered columns, and open doors, enriches the understanding of the scene depicted and allows appreciation of Piranesi's work as an important documentary source.
